The Hoot system utilizes a circuit board computer inside the control panel, and a sensor type system
instead of float switch system. Why, do you ask? Possibly, to be different, or maybe they thought it was
a good idea, or it only might have been a good idea at the time.

We encountered ramifications in this design characteristic. This particular component often broke. Installers didn’t properly seal the panel wires from the tank to the control panel, and chlorine gas would get into the control panel and wreak havoc. Hoot is not the only brand to have a “system-specific” control panel; there are others. This is one consideration with Hoot, and other brands experience similar or other issues. Many of these issues are due to poor installation rather than the failure of the
components. If you get a Hoot system make sure you tell your installer you want floats installed, rather than sensors. This minor alteration should allow any reputable septic company, the ability to make repairs, should the need arise. Another issue: the location of the floats put in the corner and screwed on with a PVC cap, makes it not readily accessible can be resolved by installing a 20” Tuf-Tite adapter ring and riser and situating the pump within the riser increasing accessibility.

Other issues are that hoot will not sell to installers who don’t install Hoot or will and charge outrageous prices. Leading most installers just to establish a different control panel that is easy to work on. Hoot for some reason thinks you need a control panel you would find on a city wastewater treatment plant that’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but for what the system is it doesn’t need all the things it has.

Septic System Diffusers

Another consideration of the Hoot System is the ease of access, to the diffusers. You may not ever have to take them off, however, if they do need to be removed, it is more cumbersome than others. Specifically, in the old systems, there were rubber boots on the PVC. These boots would rot, and come loose, etc. Now the diffusers are “piped in” with glue. The pipe is also more substantial: 1 ½ instead of 1 ¼ or one inch, like everyone else, uses. This results in very little room, to work when repairing them.

Septic System Aerators

Hoot Systems use Troyair septic air/aerators. These pumps are made by Hiblow. The TROYAIR H450 H365, H500, H600, LA500, LAR500 air pump each equate to a HiBlow HP-80 (painted brown with a Troyair sticker on it). As well, the H 750,750A for a 750gpd system equates to a Hiblow HP100LL, and the Troyair H820, LA820, H1000, LA1000 each equates to a Hiblow HP120LL. A noticeable difference is that the air nipple is located in the front (which is patented for the Troyair). In some parts of Texas and most of Louisiana, local authorities will force you to install a TROYAIR. In Louisiana, this is an enforceable regulation, which forces the homeowner to purchase the replacement part from an agent of Hoot/Troyair. An example of this would be: not allowing an individual to buy parts from a local/neighborhood parts store to repair their vehicle, but instead forcing them to purchase parts from an automobile dealership. They say this and that different like the thermal capacitor is rated higher. We have never seen a troy air perform better or worse than a standard Hiblow.

One of the frustrating things if your a septic professional is that jet will only sell to jet people and this is very frustrating. Because when you call to get parts, they tell you to call a dealer who then wants to charge 600 dollars for a 300 dollar part. So most just use alternative shaft pumps. I don’t know why this as a provider I would instead buy OEM parts jets aerator last a long time in most cases if they did. In some states, they will force you to use a jet authorized dealer, or repair person. Its a significant part of why they are not factor in a lot of states. It also has made a considerable market for alternative parts. If you are the small business and your family depends on you your not going to give a job away from that someone called you to do so, you will fix it with what is out there and make it work efficiently. All jet has done by restricting the market is hurt their growth by taking an anti-free market stance trying to control something that at the mommet they don’t it limits you the customer’s choices in who can provide a service and who can service you. What if the provider is not right and is hards to work with. There is a ton of issues that arise from doing things this way. Consider this when you are doing a system if its that complicated and only certain people can work on it why would you no choice a system that is easier to work on. We have always believed the easier it is, the better it’s engendered.

Since 1989 Hydro-Action has been in the aerobic septic system business. Hydro-Action was made in Texas until 2004-2006 and was owned by Gig. They are prevalent in the Midwest, and east coast areas not a lot of new systems are being put in southern states any longer. Do to when AK received them I don’t know if they wanted to be in the aerobic septic system manufacturing business and didn’t know what to do. So it was a back burner project, and from what I gather they are a not an aggressive company. When Hydro-Action was located in Lumberton, they were being put in the ground left and right in Texas, so you see them in Texas, Louisiana, and other southern states. AK is making a push back into these states.

The unit itself is well made and does a great job treating wastewater it is one of the top tier units with great diffusers and comfortable access design that is service friendly. It is easier to service the diffusers than systems that are of a similar design Clearstream being the big one. It is close in design to Clearstream, and Ecological Tank Aerobic septic system. These units use Gast Rotary vane septic air pumps or Hiblow septic aerators.

Clearstream started out as a fiberglass tank manufacture after not liking the quality of the tanks they were receiving from a different aerobic septic system manufacturer. They still produce fiberglass systems in large numbers but have moved massively to the concrete all in one system do to installer demand and profit. It’s cheaper to manufacture concrete systems than fiberglass ones. They are remarkably fast at moving a system from the truck to in the ground. They have special trucks with knuckle boom cranes. Theses cranes allow them to get systems in the field of the most difficult of areas.

Clearstream Septic Builds treatment systems constructed of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic, and concrete. Fiberglass tanks are made of the best quality fiberglass reinforcement strands available. They were then tested and certified by an approved laboratory to meet and exceed the construction requirements of the IAPMO. Also, Clearstream Fiberglass tanks have passed the test of time. Thousands of Fiberglass tanks have been in the ground for years. Clearstream also makes Precast Reinforced Concrete tanks. All tanks must go past strict engineering standers that various county in the united states requires. Designed differently than other
thanks they are not square but oval this helps reduce the size. A testament to the strength of the tanks is that they're hoisted with bolts inside them instead of chains like everyone else. All the internal parts of a Clearstream are no corrosive and made for use in wastewater.
One of the reasons Clearstream entered the business was because they didn’t like the quality of the tanks they were receiving and decided to make a system of their own. Clearstream tanks
are very durable and very well made there is no doubt about that. Their fiberglass tanks are in our opinion the same quality and just as good as Consolidated Treatment Systems.

The Design

The AquaKlear or AK not to be confused with AK INDUSTRIES, the maker of hydro action. Was a new take on the all in one with a skimmer device that was supposed to skim the top of the settling chamber where denitrification produces a soft mat of organic material in most systems. It uses a dual-port blower Hiblow model to achieve this using an airlift method to skim the top of the water and put the skimmed material back into the aerobic chamber. Well, guess what, it doesn’t work. I have never personally seen it work in all the systems I have pumped. The piping comes too lose or something happens to the blower and it really is just a hassle. Overall the system is very structurally sound we haven’t seen one that is damaged or in cracked so they are well-made systems.

It might very well work for 6 months that NSF is testing it but in the long run, it doesn't we advise clients to toss that blower when they can’t be rebuilt any longer. And just get an 80-model pump with angle outlet. Hiblow HP-80, Fujimac 80r2, a Secoh Jdk-80 or EL-80 will work great. All you have to do is hook it up to the main airline that goes to the aerobic tank of the system, not the line that goes to the skimmer.

Other than that, it’s a great system it will do what every other all in one system will do. It’s not a knock on the owners it was a good idea it just doesn’t work and we have seen quite a bit of them there is another system that uses this feature as well and it doesn’t work either. It was more than likely a, I want a patent to say I have one thing and not a real practical thing, to begin with. A lot of that goes on in the industry and it's pretty amusing, to say the least. I have had guys swear they work and this and that I'm going off pumping thousands of systems and repairing thousand when I say this. A lot of guys say stuff and they install 8 systems a year we do that in 2 weeks.
